Future’s Past: The Black Ships

Posted by: Ripley in Art, Artifakt News, Artists, Events, General

Hello Seattle. This is an event that any art lover should not miss. The artists name is Jonathan Wakuda and his stencil work is nothing short of amazing.

Check it out. The opening reception is First Thursday Artwalk in May.

The excerpt below was taken from culturemob

May 6 – June 26, 2010 Artist Reception: Thursday, May 6, 5-8 pm Pioneer Square Art Walk: Thursday, June 3, 2010, 5-8 pm

In “Future’s Past: The Black Ships,” opening May 6 at ArtXchange Gallery, Seattle artist, Jonathan Wakuda Fischer, investigates the dual perception of Japanese culture as hyper contemporary and technologically advanced, yet one that retains and prizes its ancient traditions. Using urban graffiti techniques (spray-paint and stencils), Wakuda references both modern and ancient Japanese aesthetics such as ukiyo-e woodblock prints and the contemporary superflat movement. The paintings in “Future’s Past” tell visual stories based on folklore, anime, science fiction, and Japanese history.

In a style he calls “historical surrealism,” Wakuda’s visual narrative begins on the day in 1853 when Commodore Perry sailed four ‘black ships’ into Edo Bay. Using the analogy of foreigners as otherworldly aliens or ghosts, Wakuda reinterprets the culture shock and epochal changes that followed as Japanese society entered an era that blended East and West, advancement and tradition.

Jonathan Wakuda Fischer has exhibited his work around the country including ArtXchange Gallery, City Hall and Upper Playground in Seattle, and Lower Haters Gallery in San Francisco.

Where: ArtXchange

Live Music and Refreshments will be provided!

Upper Playground in Association with FIFTY 24SEA Gallery present the Opening Reception of: “Oh Mischievous Me”

179
As an artist she pulls from many different sources that shape the images to be painted. Folklore has been the direction she has been gravitating to. She loves old stories in which animals play tricks on people or each other. They are playful and colorful. Since these animals are surreal in nature, the paintings represent more emotion rather then the literal sense of the animal. Change can be a good thing.

“Oh Mischievous Me”
The important theme of this 179 show is to deal with layers.
What is on the inside isn’t always what is on the outside. Layers make up who we are and what we see. They can be made of many different kinds of things; animals, colors, ideas. Uncovering them can be as fun as a babushka doll or as scary as a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Looks can be deceiving, so beware!
For further information on the artist: http://179ers.blogspot.com/. For photos or preview list contact upperplaygroundjen@gmail.com.

The Opening Reception will be held for “Oh Mischievous Me” on April 16th from 6:00 – 10:00pm. Beverages will be provided.

This Should Be Interesting

Posted by: Ripley in Art, Artifakt News, Events, General

In 2012 King Tut is coming to Seattle. This should be pretty interesting. I remember being at the Metropolitan Museum of Art a few years ago in New York and seeing the Egyptian Artifacts was amazing. The story full story below from KOMO

SEATTLE — King Tut is coming back to the Emerald City.

The West Coast premiere of “Tutankhamen, the Golden King and the Great Pharos” exhibit will be featured at the Pacific Science Center in 2012 as part of the their 50th anniversary celebration.

The exhibit will contain more than 100 artifacts from the boy king’s tomb, including the golden sandals that were put on his mummified feet. Also on display will be artifacts from other prominent rules in Egypt 2,000 years ago.

The center is expecting a big draw as the last time King Tut artifacts were on display there in 1978, more than 1 million visitors attended — some even camping out to get a good spot in line.

A few of the artifacts scheduled to be on display this time were here in 1978 too, but the center says most of the items featured are new and haven’t left Egypt in over 30 years. They say back in the 70s, an exhibit item was broken when it was on tour and thus there’s been reluctance to let other artifacts leave Egypt since then, until now.

Even though the exhibit is two years away, the first tickets for large groups will go on sale in the fall.

Fleeting Beauty: Japanese Woodblock Prints

Posted by: Ripley in Art, Artifakt News, Events, General

This should be really cool; woodblock prints are visually stunning and the Japanese style is quite unique. This exhibit just opened at the SAM and will be on display from April 1–July 4, 2010.

This exhibition brings together prints from the most renowned ukiyo-e artists of the 18th and 19th centuries—including Harunobu, Utamaro, Eishi and Hiroshige—along with Hokusai’s most beloved prints, Great Wave off Kanagawa and Red Fuji. These Japanese woodblock prints demonstrate an evocative play between delicate ink lines and rich blocks of color in portraits of beautiful women and kabuki actors, jewel-like landscapes of famous places, and more. Drawn from the Mary and Allan Kollar Collection, a gift to the Seattle Art Museum on the occasion of its 75th Anniversary, this installation introduces the region to a remarkable collection of prints, all taken from early impressions and in excellent condition.
