Art in Tacoma

Posted by: Ripley in Art, Artifakt News, Artists, General

Since I am from Tacoma I thought that it would be appropriate to post about some more art related stuff about Tacoma. Over the past few years, since I have been back, there has been a surge of art and art related events in Tacoma. I think that this is great because I really do believe that art is good for you. So, lets talk about the Tacoma art walk. The Tacoma Art Walk takes place every third Thursday of every month. For a complete map of the Tacoma Art Walk click here.

I have fond memories of the Tacoma Art Walk and one of my favorite memories involves sushi. This particular art walk took place several years ago and the group that I was with were finishing up at the Tacoma Art Museum. All of us in the group were completely starving, and we spotted some nearby restaurants. As we got closer to this particular restaurant we saw through the windows that the place was crazy busy and they served sushi. When we entered the restaurant we were promptly greeted by the manager who informed us that the restaurant was not open, but before I could comment on that, because clearly they were open, she stated that this was a soft opening and that they were training the staff. The manager continued to state that because of the soft opening that everything on the menu was $5. We were all excited; so we took a nearby table that was being cleared off and proceeded to have amazing sushi and cocktails.  The restaurant is called TwoKoi and still remains my favorite place for sushi in Tacoma. I still frequent TwoKoi every chance I get and the whole reason that I discovered it was because of the Tacoma Art Walk.

Evil Dead The Musical

Posted by: Ripley in Artifakt News, Events, General

The last time that I went to a live theatrical event was an Italian opera when I was in Rome a few years ago. I did enjoy the event although I didn’t understand the opera because it was in Italian and I don’t fluently speak Italian. Anyway, the point is that theater can be fun…especially after a few drinks…and when I read about the Evil Dead musical that will be coming in a several months to Seattle I felt compelled to let people know because I’m sure it is going to be awesome! The Evil Dead movies are quite hilarious and seeing them live will be fun. I was disappointed when It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia came to the Moore Theatre in Seattle…and I was not able to score tickets. However, the Evil Dead event is far enough away and will run for a couple of months so there is no reason not to go. Here is a quick description taken from westseattleherald.com:

Evil Dead: The Musical is set to appear next and it’s going to be “A hoot” said Director Christopher Zinovitch. The play, another Seattle premiere, combines elements from three cult classic horror films Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness and combines them to make a crazy theatrical experience. There’s even a warning that the first few rows are likely to get blood spilled on them (it’s not real blood of course and washes out easily). Where the show has played elsewhere it has become a fan favorite with people showing up in white T-Shirts to better display the blood.
LImbs are dismembered, demons tell jokes, and it is all set to music. Evil Dead does feature adult language, themes, graphic comedic scenes with “lots and lots and lots of blood” and is recommended for ages 15 and up. It runs October 20 – Nov 13, 2010.

Something Interesting on the Eastside

Posted by: Ripley in Art, Events, General

There is an interesting installation this month at the Hallway Gallery in Bellevue if you are into figures and form.

The Installation is called Go Figure and features the art of:  Erik Hall, JD Hansen, Gretchen Gammell, Sjer Jacobs, Rein De Lege, and Amy Spassov.

About Hallway Gallery
Hallway Gallery is the exclusive Eastside destination for fine art. Our roster includes acclaimed international, national and regional artists who have shown a capacity for comprehensive and focused bodies of work. It is Hallway Gallery’s mission to help cultivate the careers of these artists and to assist new clients and collectors in acquiring works of art that are as distinguished as they are beautiful.

Hallway Gallery began in 1999 as the company name for artist Erik Hall. In 2002 the gallery moved into the space at 10429 NE 2nd Street in downtown Bellevue, WA. The 5,000 square foot underground space served exclusively as a work studio for Hall until 2006 when, along with Amy Spassov, the space was renovated into a full retail gallery.

The gallery has grown to include a complete and accomplished artist roster with a full menu of services that include art consulting and curating as well as corporate and private design and placement.

In 2009 the decision was made to move the gallery “streetside”. Today the gallery is located at the center of downtown Bellevue at 8th and Bellevue Way and is proud to be part of the Bellevue Collection.
